The University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Burlington, VT
Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education
The University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine seeks a Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education (SAD) to play a vital leadership role ensuring that Vermont’s only college of medicine, and one of the oldest in the country, remains a pioneer in medical education. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished, collaborative physician-leader with a proven commitment to and passion for the academic mission of medical schools and demonstrated achievement advancing excellence and innovation in medical education.
The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education (SAD) is responsible for fulfilling the College’s vision by preparing college of medicine graduates who achieve excellence in their chosen fields, by ensuring the college is respected by its peers for innovative and outstanding teaching, and by demonstrating extraordinary compassion and commitment to the service of patients, the medical profession, and the community. It is in this context that the SAD will provide leadership and engage in continuous quality improvement for medical education programs and initiatives across the medical education continuum: pre-medical, undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.
The SAD will build upon the College’s strong foundation of educational innovation and will lead 50 professionals in the Office of Medical Student Education, which encompasses Admissions, Student Services, Curriculum, Active Learning, the Teaching Academy, the Simulation Center, and all other areas related to undergraduate medical education. They will also manage the $5-6M medical education budget.
Continuing to advance the quality of and reputation for a diverse medical education at the College and its affiliate sites will be a primary focus of the new SAD. The leading edge of medical education is already being redefined at the Larner College of Medicine – supported by record-setting philanthropy. As the College becomes among the first in the nation to complete the transition of its medical curriculum to an active learning model, assuring best student outcomes through quantitative and qualitative research and assessment will be a high priority. Ensuring sufficient clinical sites to provide excellent clinical education experiences across dispersed locations will also be critical. The SAD will also play a key role in preparing for an LCME site visit in 2021. In addition, the SAD will engage in and foster scholarship in medical education. The SAD will also play an active role in the pursuit of philanthropic support to enhance medical education across the continuum. Professionalism is also a high priority at the College. The new SAD will bring proven ability to cultivate diverse and inclusive work and learning environments that lead to the successful recruitment and retention of a diverse student body – one that embraces altruism, kindness, and respect, and one that will demonstrate professionalism through cultural humility, integrity, accountability, compassion, and social responsibility. This will be vital to ensuring a medical education at the Larner College of Medicine that is second to none in preparing the next generation of physicians. The successful candidate will be a physician-leader with at least 5-10 years experience in medical education excited by the opportunity to play a leadership role ensuring the highest quality medical education at a vital urban university serving one of the nation’s rural regions. Candidates must have experience with and embrace the integration of best practice teaching modalities, in particular active learning, with advanced technology to deliver the best medical curriculum possible, and bring a deep appreciation for interprofessional education. The ideal candidate will also bring experience with the LCME accreditation process and expertise in curriculum assessment and implementation. Critical to success will be the ability to cultivate strong and enduring relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, and students within the College, at the UVM Medical Center, across the UVM Health Network, in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and with affiliate sites. They will also share the institution’s unwavering commitment to Inclusive Excellence. An M.D. with a record of academic achievement to meet the criteria for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at the University of Vermont is required. The SAD will hold a faculty appointment in a department within the College appropriate to expertise and interests.
The University of Vermont College of Medicine, now the Larner College of Medicine, was founded in 1822 and is the nation’s seventh oldest medical school. The College, along with the Medical Center, is part of the UVM Health Network, which also includes six hospitals located throughout Vermont and northern New York, and the Visiting Nurse Association of two local counties. The College, on the same campus as the rest of UVM and adjacent to the Medical Center, is located in Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains. A vibrant community with year-round recreational opportunities, Burlington is frequently cited as one of the most livable cities in America, and one of the top college towns in the U.S.
Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, has been retained by the University of Vermont to assist in this important search. Inquiries (including requests for a detailed position profile), nominations, referrals, and CVs with cover letters should be sent in confidence to: Sarah Herman, Principal and Sydney Giller, Associate, Isaacson, Miller, 263 Summer Street, Boston, MA 02210; www.imsearch.com/7002 Electronic submission of materials is strongly encouraged. The Department of Radiology at the University of Vermont Medical Center in affiliation with The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont is seeking a fellowship-trained Breast Imaging Specialist.
This is a full-time faculty position with most of the time to be spent in breast imaging in the Clinical Scholar Pathway at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. Applicants must have completed a Breast Imaging fellowship or equivalent and must be American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified or eligible.
Expertise in interpreting digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), breast ultrasound (US) and MRI is required; along with experience performing breast biopsies with US, stereotactic and MR guidance and mammographic and US guided wire localizations.
Ours is an academic practice of 40 full and part-time radiologists who serve as the clinical faculty for a 24 member ACGME approved Diagnostic Radiology Residency program at the University of Vermont. A commitment to resident education, including engaging in case review at the workstation and monthly resident lectures is a must.
The University of Vermont Medical Center is the only tertiary referral center for the catchment area of Vermont and Northern upstate New York. The department and section are part of the larger University of Vermont Health Network in Northern Vermont and New York; comprising 6 smaller hospitals in addition to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
The Breast Care Center, staffed by surgical oncologists, nurse navigators and a physician assistant, adjoins the Breast Imaging Department. Radiologists in the Breast Imaging Division participate in multidisciplinary conferences with their colleagues in surgical, medical and radiation oncology as well as pathology and plastic surgery.
The department holds ACR accreditation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The section is typically staffed with 3 to 4 radiologists each day and performs 28,000 mammographic exams per year; including 23,000 screening mammograms, 95+% of them with 3D tomosynthesis. There are 7 Hologic mammographic units; 4 at the 2 screening sites and 3 in our diagnostic center. All units have Hologic 3D tomosynthesis and C-View. There are 3 GE E-Logic 9 ultrasound units staffed by dedicated breast sonographers. Supplementary whole breast ultrasound screening for dense breast tissue is performed with GE automated breast ultrasound. Clinical breast MRI is performed on a Philips wide bore 3.0T unit with a state of the art 16-channel breast coil. We also have available a 1.5 Tesla Philips magnet. Approximately 700 biopsies are performed each year: including US guided core biopsies, stereotactic vacuum-assisted biopsies (on both prone and upright units) and MRI guided biopsies. Last year, we also completed 32 wire localizations and over 250 consultations on outside imaging exams.
Breast imagers take approximately 6 weeks per year of general or body imaging radiology call, including weekends.
Opportunities for protected time for scholarly activity are offered. A 3.0 Tesla dedicated research magnet is operated by the University of Vermont MRI Center for Biomedical Imaging and is housed in the Radiology Department and staffed with technologists, research scientists and physicists. There are many research opportunities; as extensive data is available through the Vermont Breast Cancer Surveillance System, a statewide data repository in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium. We have previously completed a pilot study with the NIH and UCSF on breast density (6 papers published to date), and a reader study on tomosynthesis in collaboration with Hologic. A member of the section is a co-investigator on 2 R01 grants from the NIH involving multiple sites. Preference will be given to applicants who have strong research experience and/or potential. There is also opportunity for involvement and research in global health through collaboration with Imaging the World.
We are seeking a fellowship-trained board certified individual who will contribute to the division’s pursuit of clinical excellence, patient care and multidisciplinary collaboration with our clinical colleagues. The division has a strong teaching mission with residents and fellows rotating through and in 2011 was noted “Best Section for Teaching” by the 24 members of the radiology residency program. Their comments cited “best evaluations, lectures, well organized curriculum, teaching, and a fun place to work”. There is a state of the art simulation center that can be used for teaching. Our faculty members teach radiology residents, oncology and surgical fellows, medical students and undergraduate students at the University. They are also involved in community outreach and patient education about breast cancer and screening.
Vermont is a beautiful, safe, and active place to live. Burlington, Vermont, has continually been voted one of the nicest cities in which to live as well as one of America’s most “fit” cities due to the four seasons of outdoor activities. Burlington is located on Lake Champlain, 45 minutes from world-class skiing, 1.5 hours by car from Montreal, and has an international airport with direct flights to many major cities.
The compensation package is competitive and faculty rank will be Assistant, Associate or Professor, commensurate with experience.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service. Applicants are requested to include in their cover letter information about how they will further this goal.
The University of Vermont is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other category legally protected by federal or state law. The University encourages applicants from all individuals who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the institution.
Interested candidates must apply online at: www.uvmjobs.com. For additional information, please contact Sally Herschorn, MD, Division Chief and Medical Director of Breast Imaging, at sally.herschorn@uvmhealth.org or Christine Boomer at Christine.boomer@uvmhealth.org. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
