The University Veterinarian (UV) is a full-time position, reporting to the Vice President for Research, responsible for the care of all animals involved in teaching and research at UVM. Additionally, the UV has oversight of all teaching and research animal facilities at the University of Vermont. These facilities are located on the University campus in Burlington, on Spear Street in South Burlington, in Colchester and in Weybridge, VT. The UV is responsible for compliance with federal, state and university regulations, policies and procedures in an AAALAC-accredited program of teaching and research and serves as the University spokesperson on animal care related issues. The UV is the Attending Veterinarian and a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

The UV is the primary contact with the contract staffing vendor who manages the research animal facilities. The UV works closely with contract staffing management and staff and, with the unit business manager, has oversight responsibility for them. In addition to the laboratory animal facilities, the UV provides oversight of the health management and animal welfare for livestock animals (cattle and horses) in the UVM teaching facilities on Spear Street and the Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge. The UV directs the Office of Animal Care Management, which provides support for investigators in animal procurement and supports research operations by collecting census data, billing researchers for animal care services, and providing data regarding animal usage to the IACUC.

The UV is responsible for colony health management in the research animal facilities, including biosecurity, routine health monitoring, developing standard treatment plans for clinical diseases, and supervising the veterinary technicians. The UV also participates in the clinical management of cases and in the emergency call schedule for the research animal facilities. The UV trains investigators, employees and students in anesthesia, analgesia, surgical procedures and other topics relating to animal well-being, advises investigators in the development of new experimental procedures and protocols, and conducts post-approval monitoring of research activities.

In addition to the duties of the UV described above, the successful candidate may be interested in opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in relevant academic departments, to serve on graduate student committees and other university committees, and to collaborate in research activities.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the institution. Applicants are required to include in their cover letter information about how they will further this goal.

Minimum qualifications: Veterinary medical degree (DVM or VMD), license in veterinary medicine in at least one state of the U.S., significant experience in laboratory animal medicine (residency or five years of experience). Eligibility for Laboratory Animal Medicine board-certification (ACLAM) highly desirable.
