We are looking for a DevOps System Engineer to support our Broken Land Parkway office in Columbia, MD. We utilize a small team of engineers with diverse communication experience operating in a collaborative, flexible office design, install and operate end-to-end integrated voice and data communications systems for Government, Commercial clients. Jacobs Technology approach is unique in the industry, we utilize a combination of Jacobs Technology-owned, customer-premise–based proprietary technologies to provide clients with global voice and data communications systems. Our team also provides management of all of the voice and data communications network and services elements throughout the life of the solution. Utilizing Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and we build and enhance our 24/7 communications offerings in SIP and Hosted PBX services leveraging Open Source technology. You will be in a position to enhance your experience in this performance-oriented, real-time communications field, and be in a position to make significant contributions to the development and operations of new services. Duties and responsibilities may include the following:
  • Design, implement, and maintain custom modules and configure standard modules for Asterisk based call processing and custom command and control interfaces.
  • Design, implement and maintain new applications, and scripts to support, enhance and extend communication services
  • Design, implement and maintain database schema for call processing nodes that integrate with a proprietary call center
  • Enhance and maintain existing code and participate in design reviews and code reviews with other team members.
  • Develop rigorous testing methodologies and focus to reduce/eliminate QA bugs and production bugs.
  • Investigate operational issues in our services platform; assess the performance of service components to keep capacity ahead of demand.
  • Participate in new feature rollouts across the network, usually during low usage hours.
 Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically has a BS degree in a computer or system science discipline from an accredited college or university and three (3) to five (5) years of progressive, relevant experience, or an MS degree in a computer or system science and two (2) to three (3) years of progressive experience, or Ph.D. degree in a computer of system science discipline.
  • Communications based experience, using sockets-based (or equivalent) communications
  • Experience in scripting languages, typically PHP or Python
  • Compiled language programming experience, typically C
  • Knowledge of Linux environment, including command line, shell, and general program development and debugging techniques
  • Experience in System Engineering, Asterisk, Development and Operations or equivalent experience, education and certifications
  • Minimum of a secret clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with a polygraph
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with telecommunications through work or college level studies
  • Open Source Communications Platforms (Asterisk, Kamailio)
  • Closed Source Communications Platform (CISCO)
  • Relational Databases (MySQL, Postgres)
  • Networking Switches, Routers, Firewalls, IDSs and Security Appliances
  • Knowledge of build tools and source maintenance: yum, svn
  • Knowledge of packet tracing tools: wireshark. tcpdump, etc.

Most work will be done at a desk or computer.

Work Environment:
General Office environment. The work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures. The nature of the work requires a high degree of teamwork and cooperation with other members of the staff as well as individuals across the Company and Customers.

Equipment & Machines:
General office equipment including PC/laptop, Fax, Copiers, Shredder, Printers, Telephone, and other miscellaneous office equipment.

Attendance is critical at all times. Must be able to work a 40-hour workweek, normally Monday through Friday. However, times and days may vary depending on business requirements. On-call hours may be necessary to meet contract and client operational requirements. Needs to be available to work overtime during critical peaks and be available to meet last minute requests for overtime should the situation occur.

Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance with a polygraph.
