Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Working collaboratively with project staff, the Senior Strategic Communication Director will work closely with USAID and key stakeholders to ensure that state of the art communications techniques and methods are integrated across multiple MNCH/FP/RH initiatives carried out under the USAID MOMENTUM program.  Specifically, the Team Lead will:

  • Develop and implement a project level communications strategy and plan, including: identification of key audiences, message development, outreach, and engagement for both internal and external audiences;
  • Work closely with USAID and implementing partners to craft targeted messages for different audiences across multiple platforms
  • Ensure that project documents follow USAID publication guidelines by working with project technical staff and publication staff to ensure high quality technical writing, editing, formatting and graphics. 
  • Create communications tools and resources that can be used by implementing partners to craft effective communication products within their own programs.
  • Lead efforts to develop and manage a global brand for the USAID MOMENTUM initiative;
  • Coordinate project events both in Washington, D.C. and in countries to showcase project accomplishments; and
  • Conduct communications- and knowledge management-related training for project staff.

Key Qualifications:

  • MPH or Master’s degree in communications, marketing, international development, or related field
  • Experience with digital communications strategies involving social media
  • Understanding of USAID priorities for reproductive, maternal, adolescent and newborn health and family planning
  • At least 15 years’ experience in international health programming, including at least ten years’ experience in senior management positions leading communications in large and complex projects
  • Experience developing communications strategies, learning agendas, and materials related to relevant project technical areas
  • Expertise in knowledge management platforms such as SharePoint
  • Experience working on short- or long-term assignments overseas in a developing-country setting
  • Ability to work independently and also across teams
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations and developing country environments
  • Ability to travel domestically or internationally as necessary (approximately 25% time)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional foreign language skills, especially in French
