  • Title: Manager, Facilities Engineering


    Position Summary

    The Facilities Engineering Manager provides technical leadership to a team of engineers that are responsible for building automation and utility engineering.  This includes requirements development, system design, system qualification, predictive monitoring and equipment troubleshooting.  This person has expertise in building management systems, environmental monitoring, HVAC, RO/DI, process gas, electrical controls and other utility systems required for support of a regulated manufacturing environment.



    • Building Automation
      • Maintain and improve our Siemens Building Automation System while ensuring compliance with Illumina SOP’s and current industry requirements
      • Provide strategic vision for utilization of BAS at our San Diego site
      • Provide BAS guidance to global sites as needed
      • Provide technical input for daily troubleshooting and system optimization
      • Provide technical input on environmental monitoring systems to control temperatures, room pressures, and humidity in critical lab environments
      • Provide input for detailed design of BMS controls documents for new installations and renovations
      • Provide programming, graphic design and system testing of controlled systems
      • Provide support for BAS upgrades



    • Facility & Utility Engineering
      • Work cross-functionally with Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Compliance to ensure all changes, improvements and repairs meet the requirements of our internal customers
      • Identify and implement performance improvement and energy savings opportunities
      • Identify and implement predictive monitoring where it adds value
      • Creation of engineering specifications and design concepts
      • Facilitate the generation of design specifications as well as other engineering-related documentation to support facility / utility qualifications and commissioning
      • Assist in the development of preventive maintenance procedures and reliability-based activities
      • Deep level of understanding and practical experience with FDA cGMP regulations and requirements for facilities and utilities for medical device manufacturing


    • Management
      • Provide leadership and direction to a team of highly skilled facility engineers to ensure goals and objectives are achieved
      • Provide technical guidance
      • Provide growth opportunities for team members
      • Present technical information in a concise manner
      • Budgeting and cost-benefit analysis for purchases typically ranging from $50,000 to $2,000,000
      • Responsible for continuous improvement and sustaining efforts to improve the effectiveness of our Facilities procedures
      • Project management, schedule creation, resource management
      • Cross-functional team leadership
      • Ability to manage competing priorities/projects and maintain tight timelines


    • Requirements
      • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Or, professional training with a minimum of five years working experience in multiple maintenance/engineering fields. 
      • Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8 years industrial experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a FDA and ISO regulated environment
      • Requires a minimum of 5 years experience managing / leading teams 
      • Requires a minimum of 2 years direct people management
      • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with cross-functional groups at all levels
      • Must be a highly motivated leader ready to work in a fast-paced environment
