Biological Sciences Scientist II


Parsons is seeking a Biological Sciences Scientist to perform pre-clinical vaccine evaluation, vaccine antigen and delivery platform research, laboratory management and parasite culturing, structural biology consultation, and parasite culture consultation at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in the Malaria Biologics Branch (MBB) located in Silver Spring, Maryland.


WRAIR has a distinguished history of serving America's military. It was founded by the U.S. Army Surgeon General George Sternberg in 1893 as the Army Medical School and is widely recognized as the oldest school of public health and preventive medicine in the United States. The vision of the Military Malaria Research Program is to lead and support US and international malaria diagnostics, drug and vaccine development efforts by providing knowledge, expertise, training, and products for Force Health Protection and in support of malaria mortality reduction and elimination world-wide. This effort is in support of the Malaria Biologics Branch (MBB) at WRAIR to develop a highly efficacious biologic as an effective medical countermeasure to combat malaria.



  • Act as an expert to ensure the conduct of studies leading up to clinical trials
  • Responsible for immunological evaluation of vaccines in pre-clinical models (mice and other high-order species) and Phase 1 vaccine trials;
  • Conduct applied research in vaccine development in support of the Malaria Structural Vaccinology Lab;
  • Research and execute novel technologies in the field of molecular biology, protein biochemistry and GMP process development; and provide parasite culture and immunological assay related services.


Minimum Education: PhD in the biological sciences or equivalence in related discipline.


Minimum Experience: 3-10 years of specific technical experience in their field of expertise, experience in protein crystallization and interpretation of molecular structure of malaria vaccine candidates.


Knowledge Base: Ability to produce recombinant proteins and particulate vaccines and characterize them by using biochemical and biophysical techniques. Familiarity with the use of mouse model and vectors and development of assays to measure vaccine immunogenicity in animal models. Knowledge and skills developing and conducting experiments in the area of molecular, biochemical, malaria parasitology or immunological assays. Technical skills and knowledge of molecular, biochemical, parasitological and immunological assays. In-depth knowledge of instrumentation (Mesoscale, various flow cytometers) and flow cytometric software. Familiarity with laboratory work and knowledge of laboratory management, supplies ordering/procurement with training and use of the Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support (DMLSS), Electronic Centralized Acquisition Tool (ECAT), and Medical Master Catalog (MMC) systems, Design and validation parameters for ELISA assay development and testing.



Must be able to obtain, maintain and/or currently possess a security clearance.
