Job Description

  • Position Summary:

     

    Illumina is looking for a highly motivated, energetic individual with deep and broad experience in IP and other complex commercial litigation.  As a member of the Illumina multi-disciplinary legal team, this attorney will handle IP and commercial litigation, including pre-suit investigations, discovery, pre-trial and trial proceedings worldwide.  Location will be Illumina’s San Diego Headquarters.

     

      Responsibilities

    • Oversee IP and Commercial litigation matters worldwide and develop strategies and solutions for these matters consistent with business goals
    • Closely manage outside counsel, including developing litigation strategy and tactics for discovery, trials, appeals, and patent administrative disputes, including IPRs, reexaminations, and European oppositions
    • Be a great and trusted defender of the company and its interests, and valuable counselor to the business
    • Manage cases to budget
    • Provide timely and accurate reporting to direct supervisor
    • Resolve disputes and help the company avoid disputes


    Required Experience/Skills

    • 6-10 years’ experience handling patent and complex commercial litigations
    • Ability to think and act quickly and decisively
    • Excellent communication skills and an outstanding ability to explain legal matters to business leaders across all departments
    • Ability to work as a team player in a fast-paced environment
    • Exceptional judgment and strong tactical skills
    • Must be a strong advocate and skilled negotiator
    • Ability to work on a wide variety of matters quickly and effectively
    • Must have a positive outlook

     

    Required educational background

    • Law degree from top-tier U.S. law school
    • Admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. state and, if in a state other than California, be eligible for admission under California’s rules for registered in-house counsel
    • Licensed to practice at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
    • Undergraduate technical degree, advanced degree preferred

     

    Technical study can be in any field, but must be able to quickly learn and understand the company’s technology with enough detail to contribute to cases.  The company’s technology includes the fields of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, optics, and engineering with a focus on biological analysis systems and their control systems, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, and related fields.
