Job Description

Our public health group is growing and we’re currently seeking a Medical Records Abstractor to work in Atlanta, GA, sitting onsite with CDC.

Medical Records Abstractor:

Provide support in the areas of medical and other record abstraction of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) cases at metropolitan Atlanta hospitals and clinics.

  • Collect and compile epidemiologic data on infants and fetuses with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), congenital malformations, genetic diseases, or congenital infections. Specific tasks to collect these data include:

Regular visits to medical providers, genetic laboratories, hospital nurseries, obstetric units, pediatric wards, and medical record rooms to identify potential cases with these conditions. Work with hospital/clinic/provider staff to have access to required locations and records.  Complete any training at locations necessary to have access to records.  Work with location staff to have appropriate computerized listings completed (Discharge Index lists of potentially eligible cases) for review. Review of medical, laboratory, and vital records of such infants and fetuses to determine if fetus/infant/child meets Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program (MACDP) case definition.  Complete full abstraction information for eligible cases in CDC-developed surveillance forms or laptop or future web-based software.  Coding of neonatal abstinence syndrome using a modified ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM (when available) system which has birth defect detailed codes. Re-abstracting or re-review of cases returned by CDC to the abstractors for quality assurance or completeness.  Additional abstraction or re-review of cases returned by CDC to the abstractors to obtain additional information as needed in regular timely manner. Provide enhanced surveillance and abstraction on an ad hoc basis (i.e. cluster investigations, special studies, emergency response). Completing annual confidentiality, ethics, records management and other trainings as required. 

  • Participate in program evaluation of the surveillance, including making recommendations for improvements in case ascertainment and identifying additional case sources.  This could include contact with physicians and other medical care providers, hospitals, clinics and laboratory personnel by phone, written letters and reports, questionnaires and oral presentations.
  • Participate in specific projects to assess the quality, consistency, and completeness of the surveillance data collected.  This could include revisiting hospitals, offices, laboratories and other data sources to verify that all affected infants and fetuses have been identified, and re-abstracting cases at these sources for comparison with existing data.

Education:  Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, RN, LPN or background in nursing, medical records or related medical field.

Experience:  Minimum of 2 years in nursing, child development, medical records abstraction, or medical records technology experience preferred.
