Position Description:

Be a part of the team accepting the exciting challenge to return mankind back to the Moon and beyond. Our Structural Dynamics & Integration team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks for structural analysis of the Space Launch System (SLS) including the Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) functions.

 

Responsibilities:

We are searching for a subject matter expert to provide Systems Engineering support for the SLS vehicle development. Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would be to:

  • Provide structural dynamics analysis and related documentation support to the Structures, Dynamics (Loads), Shock, and Vibration team. This team has several SLS Data products that will need to be updated to support SLS Block 1B milestones including Detailed Verification Objectives (DVO), Detailed Validation Objectives (DVaO), & Data Math Models (DMM).
  • Support requirements derivation and documentation. This support requires initiating and maintaining open communication with customers on specifications and specification change management.
  • Initiate and maintain extensive contacts with key engineers/scientists and officials of other organizations and companies to resolve SLS related structural dynamics and loads analysis critical issues.
  • Ensure integration of processes of methodologies to maintain performance of the total system.
  • Deliver presentations of critical issues to Engineering Review Boards and Control Boards.

 

Qualifications

 Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred.

Typically the educational requirements are:

    • PhD and 24+ years of direct experience
    • Masters and 28+ years of direct experience
    • Bachelors and 30+ years of direct experience

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience with dynamics analysis of structural systems using strength of materials and finite element based methods.
  • Experience with structural finite element model development processes and application to structural validation of complex vehicle systems.
  • The ability to deliberate, advise, advocate, and negotiate the resolution of critical issues.
  • Personnel are required to be self-motivated, team players familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and independent problem solving skills.
  • Experience with a PC and Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are required.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Successful candidate should have a Systems Engineering background, preferably with the ability to understand and work with analysts within the Structures team.
  • Must be able to interface between the SLS Systems Engineering organization and the Structures team.
  • Familiarity with MSFC system engineering processes.
  • Understanding and knowledge of current SLS program plans and strategy.
  • Experience in complex space launch vehicle or aircraft structural requirements verification and validation.

Essential Functions:

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

 

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

 

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
