Provide System Engineering support to the System Analysis Branch (EV74) and Systems Modeling and Data Integration Team in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and task teams.

The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:

  • Review proposed models and determine if they meet the criteria of being categorized a Design Math Model (DMM) and tracked by the SLS Program. 
  • Support the model developers in developing the metadata associated with their Model.
    • Develop, populate, and track inputs to the Design Model Log. 
    • Perform functional integration assessments related to model validations. 
    • Coordinate and help to ensure that all models meet appropriate documentation and approval milestones. 
    • Provide guidance to model owners to characterize their metadata. 
    • Measure and track the maturity level of models, simulations, and their metadata across the SLS Program. 
  • Serve as a System Engineering representative to DMM Task Team:
    • Review the DMM metadata and ensure that it is complete and accurate. 
    • Participate in the Task Team review of the DMM. 
    • Provide System Engineering concurrence that the DMM and metadata meets all of the stated objectives and is ready for use by SLS. 
  • Serve as the SLS System Engineering representative to the Data Integration – Integrated Task Team (DI-ITT).
    • Serve as the SLS representative to the DI-ITT.
    • Perform as the interface between SLS and the DI-ITT developers regarding tool development and updates in support of SLS. 
    • Coordinate tool develop priorities (needs versus likes to have) with the DI-ITT. 
    • Support rolling out new tools developed for SLS.  Provide training and capture issues users identify.
    • Support the SLS Lead System Engineer (LSE) and coordinate on new tools or updates to existing tools.    
 
Qualifications
 

Degree in Computer, Aerospace, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering or a BS in a related technical discipline such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics is required. Degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or a BS with at least 15 years of experience. 


The candidate is also required to have:

  • Knowledge of the use of modeling and simulation throughout a product life cycle.
  • Knowledge of verification, validation, and accreditation/certification (VV&A) of models and simulation.
  • Technical integration experience working with a variety of engineering disciplines and project/program organizations.
  • Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving and the capability to break down complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns or issues.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Desired (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):

  • Experience/knowledge of NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of NASA management of Design Math Models (DMMs).
  • Knowledge of NASA spacecraft, launch vehicles, or SLS Program.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

 

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

 

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
