Position Description:

The Liquid Engines Office (LEO) supports the system level design, integration, development, test, qualification, and acceptance of the Space Launch System (SLS), RS-25 engines. This position will support the LEO Resident Management Office (RMO) at the prime contractor’s, Canoga Park, Los Angeles, CA location.


  • Provide senior level technical support to the LEO.
  • Identify opportunities for affordability and/or process improvements within Liquid Engines Office (LEO) and prime contractor manufacturing and business processes and practices in an effort to reduce the cost and lead time of engines
  • Operate as the RS-25 Chief Engineer’s on-site liaison.
  • Represent the RS-25 Chief Engineer in the contractor’s Material Review Board (MRB), Corrective Action Board, Process Change Board, and back-up Chair of the MSFC Primary Material Review Boards (PMRB).


  • Serve in a back-up capacity for the NASA Resident Office Manager.
  • Provide manufacturing hardware and process insight to the LEO helping to ensure on time delivery of hardware and expedient resolution of technical issues.
  • Work to ensure clear technical communication between the prime contractor and the LEO and supporting organizations.
  • Review engine design changes for technical adequacy and proper change classification.
  • Review and coordinate the approval of Hardware Service Plan of Actions (HSPOAs) and prime contractor Stennis Space Center Action Requests (ARs)
  • Mentor younger engineers within the NASA Resident Management Office.





Degree in Engineering or related field is required.  Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 19 years of experience, Masters with at least 23 years of experience, or BS with at least 25 years of experience.

Required skills: 

  • Minimum of 25 years of experience.
  • Extensive RS-25 experience and a well-rounded knowledge of the systems, hardware, and manufacturing processes involved in the fabrication of an RS-25 rocket engine. The individual needs to be an expert at defining and facilitating rocket engine related process improvements with an eye towards efficiency and affordability.
  • Experienced insight in risk based thinking, nonconformance review, corrective action definition, failure investigations, and process change control.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Extensive experience and familiarity with RS-25 supplier management in the areas of risk management and manufacturing process control is highly desired.

Essential Functions


Work Environment: 

General office environment (90%), lab environment (10%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).


Physical Requirements: 

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%).  Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).


Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.


Other Essential Functions: 

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
