Job Description



Description of Duties:

The Big Data Systems Engineer supports the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) on the Integrated Research and Development for Enterprise Solutions (IRES) contract. The candidate will:

  • Apply systems engineering best practices and design solutions to meet customer requirements
  • Coordinate with other RBA Teams, Design Engineers, and Developers to plan, design, document, deploy, operate, and maintain the Data Analytics Platform
  • Assist Data Analytics Systems Administrators with managing and maintaining the Data Analytics Platform
  • Be proficient with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)and Windows Operating Systems
  • Be proficient with virtualization technologies, networking, databases, and object-oriented development
  • Be able to achieve a high level understanding of Big Data platforms
  • Be part of multi-functional Analytics Team of Systems Engineers, Application Engineers, Database Engineers, Developers, Data Scientists, and Metrics Engineers
  • Provide IT Leadership to junior administrators
  • Serve as primary point for the design, deployment, and integration of new COTS, GOTS, and custom solutions
  • Brief detailed technical concepts and designs to CIO-level decision makers clearly and succinctly
  • Develop detailed documentation packages based on approved designs prior to deployment
  • Identify and break down complex requirements into derivative tasks, identify dependencies and estimate labor required to complete tasks.
  • Configure standards based security mechanisms, including network-based access controls, encryption, authentication, and authorization
  • Follow established enterprise Change Management processes and procedures
  • Perform impacting-changes in scheduled maintenance windows during non-business hours
  • Create and update existing DoDAF documentation to maintain correct and accurate Technical Baseline
  • Mentor junior administrators to improve their knowledge, efficiency, and operational tempo

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Ability to work in a highly secure environment requiring a high degree of engineering rigor
  • Ability to document technical implementations prior to installation and maintain during Operations and Maintenance

This position can be filled at at Schriever AFB, Colorado Springs, CO or Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL.

Basic Requirements:

Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience: HS Diploma (or GED) and 12-14 years of general experience; Associate’s degree and 10-12 years of general experience; Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years of general experience; Master’s degree and 6-8 years of general experience.


  • Must have at least 7 years of directly related experience maintaining a network/operational environment
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in a management or leadership role
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft operating systems
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Systems Design Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years providing technical leadership
  • Demonstrated understanding of Active Directory infrastructure and Group Policy Objects
  • Demonstrated understanding of name resolution (DNS, WINS)
  • Must have DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level II certification (or obtain within 30 days of start date)
  • Must have an active DoD Secret Clearance (or able to obtain)


Desired Requirements:

  • Experience with big data platforms of Hadoop, Elastic, and Kafka
  • Experience with big data technologies to include:
  • Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS)
  • YARN, Zookeeper, Hive, Impala, Spark, Oozie, and Sentry
  • Logstash, Kibana, and Elasticsearch
  • Experience deploying Java-based COTS, GOTS, and custom solutions
  • Experience working with VMware virtualization platforms
  • Experience with the administration of Microsoft SQL and MySQL databases
  • Understanding of networking theory and practical application (Cisco OSI Model)
  • Experience with automation using Bash, Powershell, and Ansible scripting
