We have the unique and significant role to partner with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC), to be part of every human spaceflight program – the International Space Station (ISS), NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which will carry astronauts into deep space, and Gateway, the orbiting platform providing the home for astronauts to work and travel back and forth to the moon’s surface, and serving as the platform for deep space exploration.  From critical systems on the ISS to enable astronauts to live and work in space; to performing advanced development for systems leading to deep space exploration; to being part of the foundation for Gateway. 

 

We also partner with NASA at JSC, the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samples returned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbital debris analysis, and basic research to further humankind’s understanding of the origins of our solar system.

We are currently in need of a Manufacturing Manager to join our team with MRI, a JETS teammate company.  Do you have the following skills?

 

The Manufacturing Manager will:
  • Support and promote management’s vision and direction for manufacturing at Johnson Space Center.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for, and provide functional management and oversight in, a machine shop operation environment including CNC milling, manual and programmable lathe operations, sheet metal fabrication, welding, composite fabrication, soft goods, additive manufacturing and precision cleaning.
  • Propose and implement innovative initiatives to include increasing production, adding new capabilities such as 5-axis machining, increasing customer base, and other initiatives.
  • Ensure strict shop compliance for existing processes/procedures and recommend/implement process improvements that focus on quality, cost, schedule, customer service, change control, job tracking, etc.
  • Develop and implement a clear method to communicate project status of ongoing activities to customers and management.
  • Maintain customer-coordinated expected schedules along with prioritizing needs.
  • Understand and implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for all represented employees.
  • Review all work requests coming into the facility and develop/provide accurate cost estimates to customers.
  • Develop and implement training plans and programs including mentoring programs.
  • Implement modern manufacturing methodology to ensure cost competitiveness and eliminate defects.
  • Confirm, monitor and track internal and external on-time delivery.
  • Develop and/or post Key Performance Indicators to ensure quality, on-time performance and other progress metrics.
  • Develop and maintain an environment that promotes ownership at the lowest possible level; provide the authority to those to ensure success and insist on accountability.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

 
Qualifications
 

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and ten (10) years of direct engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and eight (8) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. and four (4) years of direct engineering experience.
  • Must have supervisory and management experience in a machine shop manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in leading multi-disciplinary teams is required.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skill.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Project.

Requisition Preferences:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering with significant manufacturing coursework or Degree in Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • Flight hardware experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Lean Manufacturing is a plus.
  • Training in Kaizan and/or 5S is a plus.

Essential Functions

Work Environment
Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

 

Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

 

Equipment and Machines
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

 

Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

 

Other Essential Functions
Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
