Position Description:

The Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Materials and Processes Department (JM) is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to lead our Metals Analysis Team (JM19).

JSEG Team Leads are the first line of supervision of JSEG personnel and lead their teams in the execution of technical assignments in support of the ESSCA contract. They ensure that high-performing people are acquired through disciplined human resources processes and are appropriately trained, developed and perform to Jacobs’s policy and standards. Team Leads are responsible for the proactive management of assigned Task Orders and personnel to ensure effective accomplishment of MSFC requirements.

The JSEG Metals Analysis Team supports and works alongside NASA’s Metallic Materials Science and Metallurgy Branch (EM31) at Marshall Space Flight Center.  The team performs microgravity materials science experimentation, metallurgical analysis, failure analysis, and materials characterization.

Responsibilities:

The Metals Analysis Team Lead will lead a strong and high performing group of approximately 11 engineers, scientists, and technicians.  Specific duties include:

  • Collaborating with NASA branch management to understand customer schedules, set priorities, and articulate expectations.
  • Balancing workload across the team while ensuring individual assignments align with employee skills and expertise.
  • Providing technical supervision and oversight of individual and team technical performance including subcontractors.
  • Ensuring products developed and services provided by the JSEG Metals Analysis Team meet or surpass NASA and JSEG expectations for quality and timeliness.
  • Enhancing the capabilities and skills of the JSEG Metals Analysis Team and its individual members.  Assist and encourage employees in the development Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and attainment of professional goals.  Conduct performance evaluations and provide input into merit process.  Maximize use of JSEG and customer recognition programs to acknowledge team and individual performance.  Develop performance improvement plans (PIPs) and support disciplinary actions by JSEG management when necessary.
  • Managing and Administering the ESSCA Task Order under which the team operates.  Ensure that tasks and subtasks are written clearly and estimated correctly.  Track and manage technical, schedule, and financial performance of each subtask to ensure NASA and JSEG expectations are met or exceeded.  Allocate, control, and track resource utilization.  Identify and manage risks to technical, schedule, and cost performance.
  • Understanding the JSEG Performance Management System (JPMS) and using it to manage the team and ensure the technical quality and compliance with AS9100 requirements of the work products developed and services provided by team personnel.
  • Embracing and exemplifying the Jacobs Beyond Zero culture as well as fulfilling JSEG and NASA safety requirements such as conducting Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) assessments for team members; performing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments; conducting monthly safety meetings; performing monthly safety inspections of employee work areas; and tracking employee training and certification requirements.
  • Leading recruiting and hiring in support of the Metals Analysis Team.  Define position requirements, source and recruit candidates, conduct interviews, initiate offer process, and lead candidate through on-boarding activities.
  • Supporting JSEG contract-level goals and deliverables through submission of monthly status reports, documenting significant accomplishments, capturing customer kudos, suggesting process improvements, and identifying potential cost savings.
  • Perform administrative duties necessary to manage team and support task such as approving timesheets for employees, managing subcontracts and external procurements, processing employee travel & expense reports, and managing employee training requests.

In addition, the Metals Analysis Team lead will also be expected to perform direct technical work in their field of expertise (up to 50%).

 
Qualifications
 

Qualifications:

The position requires

  • A degree in science, engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited university.   A Master’s Degree in metals engineering, metallurgical engineering, or materials science with at least 8 years of experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

 

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

 

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
