Assay Development Scientist 1 - US - California - San Diego

Illumina is seeking a talented individual to fulfill a Scientist I role in assay development. This person will build new technologies and workflows for Illumina customers as part of a multi-functional team. You will be responsible in the design and execution of experiments, perform analyses, draw conclusions and provide recommendations to the team. Ideal candidate brings a new perspective on existing challenges, exploring and implementing new concepts and methodologies.  A strong background in epigenetics and experience with Illumina arrays or sequencing applications is desired.
 
Role and Responsibilities:

• Design, conduct, analyze and document assay experiments aimed at developing array and NGS assay products.
• Exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results in a fast-paced industry with limited instruction.
• Brainstorm new concepts and technologies and drive towards down selection and proving out feasibility.
• Train and guide other team members in new techniques and procedures.
• Deliver plans and results in clear and concise manner with cross-functional colleagues through oral updates, written reports and technical meetings.
• Troubleshoot, propose next steps or suggest alternate strategies within complex systems and assays.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, or related field with minimum 0-5 years industry experience and 6+ years laboratory research experience.

• Experience in nucleic acid analysis methodologies, including, but not limited to PCR, qPCR, methylation specific PCR, microarray or next-generation sequencing.
• Data and statistical analysis of large complex data sets using JMP, R, Matlab or similar.  Utilizes DOE where appropriate.
• Experience with reagent/buffer formulation and assay development.
• Exceptional collaboration and communication skills.
• Demonstrated track record of technical achievement.
   

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Bioanalytical techniques to discover and characterize nucleic acid modifications
• Nucleic acid biochemistry, enzymology and/or chemistry experience.
• Data analysis of epigenetic/DNA methylation on array and/or NGS.
• Experience with bisulfite and / or bisulfite free conversion methods.
• Molecular biology (RNA and DNA extraction, sub-cloning, PCR optimization).
• Good organization skills, detailed orientated mindset.
