SAIC is seeking a Systems Administrator on the OMES II contract in support of the Hybrid Flight Computing Systems (HFCS) project of the OSAM-1 program in NASA’s Exploration and In-Space Services (NExIS) projects division at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  This position is located in Greenbelt, MD.

The OSAM-1 mission is a Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) NExIS managed mission. OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. NExIS is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test and operations of the OSAM-1 Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.

Job Description

The Systems Administrator will provide IT support and team management for the OSAM-1 HFCS project by providing support for the existing infrastructure, working with the existing staff to provide networking, IT security, general IT, and user support.

The HFCS team is a critical payload subsystem responsible for the design, development, integration, and test of the flight software and Field-programmable Gate Array (FPGA) capabilities that execute on the Command and Data Handling (CDH) flight processing system to facilitate autonomous on-orbit capabilities including rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO), robotic servicing, fault management and autonomy, and overall command and telemetry services for payload sensors and avionics.

Development currently occurs in a heterogeneous network environment including Linux servers and Windows and Mac user workstations.

Job duties include:

  • Assist existing system administration staff in providing network and system support for a hardware/firmware development team.  Familiarity with Linux (Centos and Ubuntu), Windows 10 and Macintosh OS X required.
  • Assist existing system administration staff with IT security support including incident response, routine patching and vulnerability maintenance.  Experience with software patching including Microsoft patching, Mac OSX patching and Linux yum required.  Experience with Splunk, Nessus, and other IT security tools preferred but not required.
  • Provide general IT and user support for a hardware/firmware development team on Linux, Windows and OSX systems.  Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite (both Windows and Macintosh versions) required.  Familiarity with engineering FPGA software preferred.
  • Provide file system backup and restoration support.  Familiarity with bacula preferred but not required.
  • Provide software installation, maintenance, and configuration support to a team of developers on Windows 10 and Macintosh OSX.  Must be able to qualify for elevated privileges for system administration.
  • Maintain the operational environments once they have been established.
  • Provide inventory support for project equipment.  Familiarity with snipe-it preferred but not required.  Familiarity with NASA equipment inventory procedures preferred but not required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related field with 9+ years of engineering experience or Associate degree in computer science or closely related field with 13+ years of related experience.
  • Relevant system administration and IT support experience in a heterogeneous system environment.
  • Proficiency with operating systems across various platforms and versions (RHEL and Ubuntu Linux, OS X/macOS, and Windows) and familiarization with interoperability methodologies.
  • Experience maintaining network backups and logs of multiple systems.
  • Ability to grasp a wide range of unique skills, and be able to think and respond quickly to real-time problems as they arise.
