Job Description and Required Qualifications

The Ocean Biology Processing Group (http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is a world leader in satellite-based remote sensing of the ocean.  The OBPG operations include a 24x7 satellite data ingestion, processing and distribution facility with over 10PB of capacity as well as support for data analysis and software development environments.  SAIC has an opening for a Computer Systems Administrator supporting the OBPG.  Duties include:

 o Configure and maintain the reliable operation of computer and network servers, including virtualization

 o Install and upgrade computer components and software, manage virtual servers, and integrate automation processes

 o Initiate preventive maintenance on the operating systems as well as repair to system/environment problems

 o Monitor and troubleshoot hardware and software errors, documenting problems and resolutions

 o Maintain and update OS and application software and firmware in both server and end-user environments

 o Evaluate, test and recommend procedural, hardware and software solutions to address project needs

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Required Skills:

 o 5+ years of Linux operating systems experience

 o Support of Linux server and workstation configurations (Red Hat and Ubuntu preferred)

 o Must be able to pass a NASA background check for System Administrators, as well as pass annual NASA IT Security Training courses for end-users and for elevated privileges

 o Must have good interpersonal skills for end-user support, the ability to work independently to resolve system issues and good documentation skills

 o Must be eligible for unescorted access to NASA facilities

 

Desired Skills:

 o Familiar with the support of large RAID NAS units

 o Gigabit networking, managed switches, troubleshooting and analysis tools for systems and networks

 o High-availability system configurations

 o Hardware and software firewalls

 

Additional skills of interest:

 o High performance computing using Slurm Workload Manager

 o Clustered file systems (Gluster / BeeGFS)

 o Linux cloud computing/container software and administration (Docker / Kubernetes)

 o Virtual machine administration, specifically RedHAT oVirt

 

Education: BS or BA Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Science, or Mathematics.
